Zambia turns 61, praised for role in Namibia’s freedom

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has praised Zambia for its pivotal role in Namibia’s liberation struggle against South Africa’s apartheid regime.

In a statement issued on Friday to mark Zambia’s 61st independence anniversary, Nandi-Ndaitwah said Namibia’s story of freedom cannot be told without acknowledging Zambia’s generosity and unwavering support.

“On this historic day, 61 years ago, the courageous people of the Republic of Zambia rose with one voice to reclaim their destiny – breaking the chains of colonial rule and ushering in an era of freedom, dignity, and self-determination.

“Today, we join the resilient people of Zambia in celebrating six decades of independence, peace, and progress,” she said.

Zambia gained its independence from Britain on 24 October 1964, becoming one of the first southern African countries to break free from colonial rule.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said Zambia’s sacrifices paved the way for prosperity across the continent and inspired other nations to continue the struggle for liberation and equality.

“For Namibia, Zambia is not merely a neighbour, it is family. During Namibia’s darkest hours, the Zambian people opened their homes and hearts to Namibians, offering sanctuary and solidarity when it was most needed,” she said.

The president extended heartfelt congratulations to Zambian president Hakainde Hichilema and the Zambian people on the country’s independence milestone.

“As we celebrate this day, let us continue to safeguard our hard-won freedoms, deepen our unity, and strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between our two nations,” Nandi-Ndaitwah added.
