Zambezi police caution drivers against bribing traffic officers

Zambezi regional police commander Andreas Shilelo says drivers who attempt to bribe police officers will be arrested during the festive season.

Shilelo said this on Wednesday at a media briefing following three bribery attempts of traffic officers in the region this week.

Shilelo said the traffic officers are at the centre of bribe attempts from drivers trying to avoid fines for their violations.

He said they have arrested two suspects.

He added that on Monday the police arrested a Zimbabwean national who attempted to bribe an officer with US$100 (about N$1 688) at the Katima Mulilo Weighbridge.

“The officials at the weighbridge summoned the driver to come out of his vehicle so that he would have to see the mass of his truck,” Shilelo said.

“However, it seems like the driver was under the influence of alcohol. They then called the traffic officers to come do an alcohol test on the driver.

Shilelo said the traffic officer upon arrival inspected the driver to determine if he was drunk.

“The driver pulled out the US$100 to offer the traffic officer as a bribe,”

Shilelo said the driver was arrested immediately.

“In another bribery case, a local driver was also arrested for attempting to bribe another traffic officer with N$100 to not issue him a fine,” he said.
