Your Date is Shy, Now What?

Everyone knows that dates can be either fun or really awkward. Some people prefer the outdoors, enjoying a picnic somewhere, while others opt for a movie to set the mood.

But when you’re an outgoing person and your date is shy, things can go sour pretty quickly. So what should you do to spice up the conversation when it’s as boring as watching Verimark ads on a Saturday evening? Because who does that?

The Weekender asked readers on social media what they would do if their dates were introverted.

Shawn Davids said “I would start talking dirty to that specific person. What do you call a relationship chat that does not get naughty at times? Boring!” And yes, he mentioned that he would do that on the first date. Ladies, be prepared for anything.

Ndapewa Salom shared her method on a date that’s gone quiet. “I will start teasing him then argue a little bit and apologise if I have to because a quiet relationship is boring. You won’t know when the person is angry or happy. I will also be asking more about future plans just to push through with the conversation”.

“I will just tell him straight ‘bae, feel free with me’,” Patronella Petrus said. “I will only know how you feel whenever you are talking to me. Don’t be shy. I am just a normal person like you. Express your feelings whenever you are angry. It’s one of your rights, otherwise, in the end, you could be having a boring relationship. That’s worse. And later, cheating will intervene.” This could be true. Communication is key and if you don’t talk to your partner or have some kind of understanding, is it really a relationship?

Popi Shiinda couldn’t help but joke. “Kick him or her.” Or was she really joking?

“I will tease him or find out what makes him happy and keeps him smiling, thus keeping the conversation moving,” Christa Hange responded. Sweet, don’t you think? It’s always a good idea to make your date comfortable. Not only can you squeeze a bunch of information out of them, but sharing moments, memories and other things only make for a better conversation.

“I would start talking about things he likes and finds an interest in, and then if that person is still that way, I would find out why he isn’t making an effort for things to work out. Later, I would dump him.” What a dark end! But honestly, there’s something incredibly stimulating about chatting to a person who says so much, and shares so much, all while making you laugh.

That’s why people prefer someone who has a good sense of humour on their ‘lists’, otherwise the relationship will just end up being a dark and dreary place. No one wants that, right?

“I will start telling her stories she likes. I know she will start warming up and then talking,” Henok Pangeiko suggested, while Rejoice Mboshono had a similar plan in mind. “I would ask him if he is happy with the relationship and find out what he likes or dislikes to make our relationship work.”

For those who aren’t really aware, a date is a way to get to know someone better, by discovering their interests and their pet peeves. And sometimes, even if they do like you, they might end up not calling you for the second date because of certain things you said or did which they are not impressed with. It happens.

As they say, first impressions always count.

But if you are the shy type and they eventually see what you’re all about, who knows if marriage could possibly be on the cards? Happy endings belong to everyone, after all.
