Young woman’s throat cut with broken glass

A YOUNG woman, Melanie Booysen (20), died on the way to the hospital in Windhoek on Saturday after her 21-year-old boyfriend allegedly slit her throat with a broken glass.

It is understood that the couple were having a braai with relatives to celebrate their four-year-old daughter’s birthday.Deputy Commissioner Silvanus Nghishidimbwa yesterday said that the incident took place in the Golgotha area in Katutura at about 17h00 on Saturday. The couple started arguing and her boyfriend allegedly cut her throat. Booysen died on the way to hospital.According to Nghishidimbwa, the suspect drove away from the scene shortly after the incident but was involved in an accident afterwards.He then allegedly got out of the car and ran towards his mother’s house nearby. There he climbed onto the roof, because, he apparently claimed, he was scared that the police would shoot at him.Some sources claimed the suspect was running away from a crowd of people who tried to do a citizen’s arrest but it could not be confirmed with the police.The suspect tried to jump from a neighbour’s roof onto that of his mother’s house but fell and broke his right leg.He was arrested while lying crying on the ground.The suspect was taken to the Katutura State Hospital for treatment. He will appear in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court in Katutura once he is discharged.Also yesterday morning, at about 04h00, a 22-year-old man, Natangwe Iipumbu, died after he lost control over his motorcycle and fell at the corner of Hosea Kutako Avenue and Frans Indongo Drive.According to Nghishidimbwa, Iipumbu’s head was severed during the accident.The body of a 37-year-old man was found in Rehoboth’s Block E residential area yesterday morning.Nghishidimbwa said he had a stab wound in his chest.Although his identity is known, his next of kin still need to be informed, Nghishidimbwa said.In another incident the body of an unidentified man was found hanging from a tree at about 02h43 in Otjomuise yesterday morning. It is suspected that he committed suicide.A man was arrested on Thursday after he had allegedly been raping his 15-year-old niece in Wanaheda over a period of time.Last Wednesday, an 18-year-old woman was raped on the outskirts of Windhoek by a man who had offered her a lift to the Ministry of Home Affairs’ office in the Northern Industrial Area.She managed to memorise his car’s registration number and he was arrested on Saturday.A suspect was arrested on Saturday after he and a female suspect, who is still on the run, allegedly hijacked a taxi at gunpoint on Friday at 23h00.The car was later found deserted.Nghishidimbwa said investigators are trying to establish whether there is a link between this incident and other similar incidents recently.
