Independent Patriots for Change president Panduleni Itula says although the war between Iran, the United States and Israel is far away, Namibians will feel its impact at their dinner tables if not resolved soon.
He says the war’s impact includes rising fuel, food and import prices if tension escalates.
Itula says the conflict will lead to situations similar to those experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic, with severe shortages in fuel, affecting the livelihoods of nations along the supply chain.
“Petrol may rise at the pump and import costs may go up, with a potential rise in inflation from 2.9% to even 3.5% or more. I urge caution in our consumption,” he said on Monday.
Meanwhile, Affirmative Repositioning chief whip Vaino Hangula says Namibia could come under increasing international pressure to adopt a clearer and more forceful diplomatic position should tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.
“It will likely increase pressure on Namibia to take a more decisive stance,” he says, adding that such pressure would not necessarily shift Namibia’s allegiance but rather demand clearer diplomatic expression of its long-standing principles.
Hangula cautions that Namibia’s position could introduce diplomatic uncertainty, particularly as geopolitical divisions among global powers become more pronounced at multilateral platforms such as the United Nations.
