WSL Cup prizes revealed

The Women Super League Cup winner will receive N$40 000, the Namibia Football Association announced on Wednesday.

On Saturday, Tura Magic FC will battle Galz and Goals FC at the NFA Technical Centre in Windhoek for honours in the pre-season tournament worth N$95 000 overall. The losing finalist will receive N$25 000 for their effort.

Preceding the final earlier the same day are holders Khomas Nampol FC and V- Power Angels who will be vying for third place, which is valued at N$15 000. Fourth place carries N$10 000. Teams ranked fifth (N$6 000) and sixth (N$4 000) also get rewarded.

The player of the tournament and best coach prizes carry the most weight in the individual stakes, with N$3 000 reserved for the competition’s outstanding footballer and gaffer. The fair play prize, which traditionally reserved for the team with the best disciplinary record, is valued at N$3 000 as well.

The top scorer award, which looks likely to go to lethal Magic markswoman Anna Shikusho, is worth N$2 000. Shikusho has netted 15 goals so far, with Beverly Ueziua on eight the next best scorer.

Also receiving N$2 000 each are the best team manager and journalist.

The following all get N$1 000 for topping their category: best goalkeeper, best defender, best midfielder, best youth player, best match official, and best assistant official.

“We are expecting fireworks on Saturday. I think these prizes will help everyone to bring their best performance and put on a great show,” said WSL Cup tournament director Tovey Hoebeb.

Magic are favourites, having lost out to Nampol in 2017 when the Cup was last held and steamrolled V-Power Angels 11-0 over two semi-final legs.

“We are very excited about Saturday’s match. Both teams are relatively strong so it will not be an easy match but I believe in my team and that we can win this cup,” said Tura Magic captain Lovisa Mulunga.

Her opposite number, Lydia Eixas, says they are underdogs but they are not going to roll over. The gutsy Galz ousted Nampol 1-0 to reach the final.

“They [Magic] are our big sisters, we respect them but we do not fear them,” she said.
