HE is a multi Stellar Gospel Music Award winning musician whose tracks ‘Nobody Greater’ and ‘Turning Around For Me’ are among the most played gospel songs.
Making waves in Hollywood gospel circles, VaShawn Mitchell is making his way to Windhoek for a night of spiritual sounds with local worship group Clive and The NOW Generation.
Speaking to The Weekender via email, VaShawn says although this is his first invitation to Namibia, he is no stranger to Africa and he is excited to worship and praise in the country come Sunday.
“It is always an honour to be invited to places that I have never been. Although it was a bit of a shock since I’m not familiar with Namibia I am truly looking forward to our time of worship together,” VaShawn said.
Referring to his music as both gospel and worship, VaShawn asked that the audience not come expecting anything of him but to rather focus on time being spent in the presence of God and to look forward to a night worshipping and praising together as a united chorus.
“It is my assignment in life to write, sing, minister and produce a sound that edifies God,” said VaShawn who has written for Grammy award winners Vanessa Bell Armstrong and Smokie Norful.
He added that he desires for the audience to walk away inspired and encouraged to seek God even more.
Admitting that a collaboration will not be possible this time around, the audience can look forward to VaShawn and his host, Clive and The NOW Generation, doing a few songs together on stage.
The award-winning singer shed some light on whether gospel music and worship are the same thing, saying the two are different in style but synoptic in purpose. Both gospel music and worship are about the message.
Having been active in the music industry since his early teens, VaShawn says he draws inspiration through daily meditation and prayer. He added that it is important to find that secret place where one can hear from God on a regular basis.
With a hub of worship ministers to select from, events coordinator Pastor Mara Booysen of Clive and the NOW Generation says they decided on VaShawn because of his influence amongst the youth. And since he was scheduled to perform in neighbouring South Africa over the weekend, they took advantage of the opportunity to have him in the country.
She added that they are already working on the next act they would like to invite and hope to put on an event of this nature annually.
