The FNB Women Super League is heading for an exciting climax after the main title contenders FC Ongos and Beaties FC drew 1-1 in a hard-fought encounter on Sunday.

The result left the defending champions Ongos at the top of the log on 37 points from 15 matches, but Beauties are just a point behind in second place, while they also have a match in hand.

In Sunday’s match both teams gave it their all in a tough encounter.

Beauties took the lead when they won a penalty for a handball midway through the first half and midfielder Millicent Hikuam made no mistake, steering her spot kick into the left-hand corner.

Ongos fought back with striker Anna Shikusho putting in some strong attacks, but they were dealt a blow when she suffered an ankle injury and had to be substituted.

Ongos continued to pile on the pressure after the break, winning several corners, and they finally equalised when Memory Ngonda headed in a loose ball midway through the second half.

Both teams pushed hard for the winner but they eventually had to settle for a share of the spoils in a bruising battle that also saw Beauties midfielder Utuzuvira Kahiriri carried off with an injury.

On Saturday, Beauties maintained their title charge with a resounding 6-0 win against Unam Bokkies.

Lydia Simuma gave them an early lead but it was only towards the end of the first half that they took control of the match. Fiola Vliete made it 2-0, while two goals within a minute by Leena Alweendo suddenly put them 4-0 ahead.

Alweendo completed her hattrick in the 60th minute, while Rauna Uugulu sealed an emphatic 6-0 victory with a goal in the dying minutes.

African Stars Queens’ title challenge, meanwhile, suffered a blow as they could only collect one point from two matches over the weekend.

On Saturday they lost 3-0 to Ongos Ladies, with Julia Rutjindo, Anna Shikusho and Lovisa Mulunga scoring the goals, while on Sunday they were held to a 1-1 draw by Unam Bokkies. The results left them in third place on the log on 35 points from 15 matches.

Khomas Nampol have fallen a bit off the pace and are currently in fourth position on 31 points, while Arrows Ladies trail well behind in fifth position on 24 points.

In another match last Thursday, Windhoek City beat Nust Babes 3-0, which saw Windhoek City moving up to eighth position on 19 points, while Nust Babes are 10th on seven points.
