Woman dies in Erongo road accident

A 48-year-old woman died on Saturday morning after the vehicle she was travelling in overturned near Uis in the Erongo region.

The Nissan pick-up in which the woman was a passenger was not roadworthy and was being driven by a man without a valid driver’s licence, according to the police

The accident happened on the C36 road between Omaruru and Uis, about 10 kilometres from Uis.

According to Erongo police acting community affairs coordinator sergeant Anastasia Frans, the driver of a single-cab bakkie with a Karibib registration number allegedly lost control of the vehicle, which then left the road and overturned.

The woman was killed in the accident and seven other occupants of the vehicle were seriously injured.

Frans added that the injured people, including the driver, were taken to Omaruru State Hospital for treatment.

Frans said the driver is due to be charged with culpable homicide, reckless or negligent driving, driving an unroadworthy vehicle on a public road and driving without a valid driver’s licence.
