Witbooi calls for unity, justice and empowerment on Africa Day

Vice president, Lucia Witbooi has called on Africans to renew their commitment to unity, self-determination, and inclusive development as the continent marks the 62nd anniversary of the African Union (AU)—celebrated annually as Africa Day.

Speaking at an event co-organised by the Namibian government and African diplomatic missions in Windhoek on Sunday, Witbooi said 25 May 25 a symbol of Africa’s enduring resilience, solidarity, and historic resolve to free itself from colonial domination.

“Africans across the continent and around the world are today celebrating the liberation of our nations — except our brothers and sisters of Western Sahara, whose just struggle we continue to support.”

Witbooi also welcomed the youth delegation from the World Federation of Democratic Youth, applauding their participation as a symbol of Africa’s inclusive hospitality and future-driven solidarity.

She cited ongoing negotiations between Namibia and Germany as essential to achieving reparatory justice and addressing the needs of affected communities, aligning with the year’s theme of ‘Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations’.

“This theme is especially relevant as we pursue our dignity, economic freedom, and independence. Africa must continue to advocate for the restitution of looted heritage, reparations for historical crimes, and reform of global governance structures,” she said.

Witbooi praised the implementation of Agenda 2063, Africa’s 50-year development framework, as a testament to the continent’s ambition to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth.

“We are in the second 10-year I
Implementation plan, and have made progress with initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” she said.

“This integrated market presents transformative opportunities for economic integration and intra-Africa trade.”

Witbooi encouraged all Africans to recommit to building a continent that is free, fair, and forward-looking.

“Let us celebrate Africa Day with pride, honour, and reclaimed African dignity,” she said.
