About 11 years ago, my two roommates Demsa and Banyab wore pyjamas under their school trousers.
How could someone sane dress like this regardless of how cold it was? I know 2012 was an extremely cold year, but it didn’t justify this type of dressing. I can imagine how uncomfortable it was for them having to dress like that.
All I’m saying is regardless of how cold it might be, comfort and style should never be under-looked. In fact, winter is a season when men can blend function and form, yet keep warm, look great and feel confident. It feels like winter is around the corner and I believe I’m prepared, and you gents should be as well. We’re going to look like well-dressed men in our winter attire and here is how.
First, warm showers are the first approach to feeling comfortably warm in winter. The longer you stay in the shower, the more the body absorbs the heat, preventing you from getting cold. If your shower takes long to warm up, while waiting do some cardio or push-ups to warm up.
Avoiding taking showers or baths because it is cold is odd. I can never be marked absent from the basic hygiene component.
No matter how cold it might be, a shower in the morning and at night is mandatory. You’re fresh and full of energy in the morning and sleep better at night and your sheets stay cleaner longer. This is non-negotiable.
Second, layering clothing, for me, is a sign of laziness. How does one wear a vest, long-sleeved T-shirt, sweater and a jacket all at once. Folks, the level of comfort in dressing like this is zero. It doesn’t snow in Namibia and there’s no reason anyone should dress like this.
There are numerous ways to keep warm and still look like the bomb-diggity.
These are some basic items you might need this winter: sweatpants, a variety of socks (long and short), knitwear (sweaters, zip sweaters, turtlenecks), bomber jackets, coats, scarves, beanies, gloves and a pair or two of ankle boots. The list is endless, but what is important is keeping warm and looking elegant all together.
Third, there’s nothing more attractive than a calm and well-behaved man. Generally, basic behaviour contributes to your appearance as well.
Here’s the thing, I understand that we’re not the same and out of the eight billion people in the world there is no one like you or me. However, men ought to have similar trends in winter.
What do I mean by this? Instead of having a cold beer, have a glass of whisky or cognac or a glass of red wine. These drinks will keep you warm.
And the mere fact that it is cold, there’s no need to stay in bars or clubs until 04h00. Our wives, girlfriends, children, parents need us, and our presence in their lives is more important than having drinks with the guys until odd hours. All I’m saying is winter should be the season men spend more time at home compared to other seasons.
Last, there’s no crocodile in the water (direct translation from Oshiwambo). The phrase simply means nothing will kill you in the water, therefore, go and take that shower or have that bath.
Continue your grooming routine because, after all, hygiene is an important component for all humans.
