Windhoek teacher in custody over rape of teen boy

Rohan Bezuidenhout

A Windhoek teacher is being held in custody after he appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on two counts of rape involving a teenage boy on Friday.

Rohan Bezuidenhout (27) appeared before magistrate Mutafela Muharukua on two counts of rape after he was arrested on Thursday.

The state is alleging that Bezuidenhout raped a boy (13) at a hostel of a high school in the capital, where he was the hostel superintendent, between May and July last year.

It is also alleged that Bezuidenhout abused his power or authority over the complainant when the alleged offences were committed.

During his court appearance, public prosecutor Menencia Hinda informed the magistrate the state objected to the granting of bail to Bezuidenhout due to the seriousness of the charges he is facing and the risk that he will interfere with state witnesses or flee if he is released on bail.

Muharukua postponed Bezuidenhout’s case to 7 July for further investigations to be carried out.

Bezuidenhout is also scheduled to return to court on Wednesday for a bail hearing date to be decided.

He is being held in custody in the meantime.

Bezuidenhout was represented by Alicia Pienaar of the law firm Ndaitwah Legal Practitioners.
