Windhoek set for fistball finale

THE final league matches of the fistball season will be played at the DTS soccer fields on Saturday to determine the new Namibian fistball champions.

Action begins at 08h30 when Cohen FC 2 take on Swakopmund SFC 1 in a match that will determine the first participant for the third-place playoff of the Bank Windhoek National A league later in the day. The second match of the day promises to be a real humdinger, as SKW 2 and Cohen FC 1 will do battle in a match in which the winner will qualify for the championship final, while the loser will left to contest the third-place playoff. Cohen FC 1 have not won a game against SKW 2 this season but there have been some close encounters recently. During the third round of league games SKW 2 struggled to a 4:3 sets victory over their rivals. The team that makes it to the final will meet SKW 1. The team – led by national team spiker Arend von Stryk – have performed well throughout the year and they were the first team to qualify for the league final. All players no doubt have their sights firmly set on winning the National A league and getting the opportunity to play at the World Club Championships, which will be held in Namibia next year. The continental champions from South America and Europe will participate in that event. While the teams of the National B league may not have qualification for an international event as an incentive, they are highly motivated nevertheless. Defending champions Cohen FC 3 have already qualified for the final of the championship. They will face either SKW 3 or SFC 2. Both teams are expected to be evenly matched and spectators can expect a nail-biting match. While the winner will be able to challenge Cohen FC 3 for the winner’s medal, the loser will contest a playoff match for third spot. Here they will meet either DTS or Cohen FC 4. DTS have improved throughout the season and club officials have confirmed a third-place finish as their target in the B division. The championship finals will be played from 14h30 when the B league teams start with the action while the final of the A league starts at 16h15. A prize-giving ceremony will be held at the DTS clubhouse in the evening where the coveted Danric Auto Player of the Day trophy will also be awarded.
