Windhoek ready to relocate flood victims to farm 508 – councillor Skrywer

City of Windhoek councillor Ivan Skrywer has announced plans to voluntarily relocate Otjomuise’s flood victims to farm 508 at Goreangab.

Over 1 000 residents have been affected after flash floods destroyed their makeshift homes at Otjomuise’s MG Division area.

Food aid, organised by the Office of the Prime Minister and the City of Windhoek, was distributed in the area behind Otjomuise Police Station on Monday.

Following an assessment visit to the affected areas along with senior officials and the police, Skrywer said farm 508 can accommodate up to 100 households.

The site, designated as a ‘reception area through controlled entry’, is managed by the Division of Human Settlement within the Department of Housing and Property Management.

“All households willing to relocate will be assisted immediately. Implementation will be swift, and we can start moving families today if they are ready,” Skrywer said.

He said an emergency meeting with internal stakeholders set the stage for relocation to begin promptly.

During his visit to Goreangab, rising water levels prompted the authorities to cordon off roads to ensure safety.

“I urge all our residents who are affected by the flash flood situation to please make themselves available to be relocated. It’s better than risking your life and those of your family,” he said.
