Windhoek mounts safety rails along busy city road

Harold Akwenye

The Windhoek City Council recently erected a rail along Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue to reduce accidents.

On Thursday, city spokesperson Harold Akwenye said the rails were installed between KFC and Wika Service Station to enhance safety and to reduce the occurrence of accidents.

“We encourage pedestrians to cross the roads at designated crossing spaces,” Akwenye said, adding that the installation of rails was a direct response to a concerning number of accidents occurring due to pedestrians trying to cross the road amid high traffic flow.

“The decision was made to implement these rails as a proactive measure to minimise accidents and enhance overall safety for both pedestrians and drivers in the area,” Akwenye said.

The city council plans to install rails along Independence Avenue from Katutura all the way through town, Akwenye said.
