Windhoek greenlights key projects, stadium upgrade

The City of Windhoek approved several major resolutions at its ordinary council meeting on Monday.

This includes the adoption of the integrated water and wastewater masterplan and the approval of upgrades to Sam Nujoma Stadium.

According to a statement issued by the municipality on Tuesday, the integrated water and wastewater masterplan serves as a 20-year roadmap aimed at ensuring sustainable and reliable water and sanitation services for residents.

The plan was developed with funding from the African Water Facility Special Fund, managed by the African Development Bank.

It focuses on improving how the city sources, uses, and manages water while upgrading wastewater systems to meet future demand and protect the environment.

It also emphasises collaboration with NamWater and aims to strengthen Windhoek’s resilience to climate change challenges such as droughts.

The council further approved the exemption of qualifying properties from paying assessment rates for the 2025/26 financial year under the Local Authorities Act.

A total of 158 applications were received, with 13 rejected for late submission.

“The council cautioned that exemptions will be revoked if properties are found not to comply, for example, if a property is used for purposes other than those declared or if rent is charged by the property owner. This measure ensures fairness and transparency,” the statement says.

In another resolution, the city renewed its agreement with the University of Namibia for another five years.

The partnership facilitates student training, research collaboration, and community projects, benefiting both the municipality and students through practical learning and innovation.

The council also approved a proposal by the Namibia Football Association (NFA) to upgrade Sam Nujoma Stadium, which was banned in 2021 from hosting international matches.

The city and the NFA will share the upgrade costs equally, with the total project valued at N$19.9 million.

Additionally, the council approved the sale of erf 340 at Katutura, measuring about 19 720 square metres, to the NFA for N$2.96 million to support continued sport infrastructure development.

The newly elected council following the 26 November elections will be sworn in on 3 December. – Nampa
