Prime minister Elijah Ngurare has urged disaster management stakeholders to take ownership of fire safety rather than wait for miracles.
Speaking on Monday, Ngurare said disaster management stakeholders should ensure that every household in Namibia has a fire extinguisher.
He stressed the importance of preparedness in reducing damages during fire emergencies.
“If it costs N$10, let us budget for N$10 to begin with ten houses. It helps us not, when we know the problem, to wait for Jesus to help us when we can help ourselves,” he said.
He was speaking at the commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction at UN Plaza in Windhoek on Monday.
Ngurare urged the public to take ownership of the initiative.
Hosted under the theme ‘Fund Resilience, Not Disasters’, the event aimed to address the escalating costs of disasters by shifting focus from reactive responses to proactive investments in disaster risk reduction.
It was organised by the Office of the Prime Minister in collaboration with the City of Windhoek and development partners.
The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction was started in 1989 by the United Nations General Assembly and is held on 13 October every year to mark how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks they face.
