Why It Hurts: A Tribute to Our Founding President

Asser Nakale

Condolences have poured in from every corner of the world as people reflect on a life that can only be described as extraordinary, that of Namibia’s Founding President, Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma.

What a man! What a leader! What a legend!

As the news spread of his death, emotions ran high, especially on social media.

Some remarked that given his advanced age and immense contribution, Sam Nujoma’s passing should not hurt so deeply.

Others argued that even at 95 years old it felt too soon to lose such a monumental figure.

UNREALISED DREAMS

Perhaps it hurts most because, despite his unwavering vision for Namibia’s future, the nation he dreamed of remains unrealised.

Sam Nujoma did not envision a Namibia where hospitals crumble under the weight of neglect.

He didn’t dream of schools closing because of a lack of water, or some pupils attending school in makeshift classrooms.

He envisioned a Namibian nation where natural resources uplifted all, not just a privileged few; a land where our youth thrive, not one where unemployment looms large.

He imagined a Namibia where every family had a home.

He did not foresee a Namibia where some leaders would prioritise greed and self-enrichment.

Perhaps Sam Nujoma’s death hurts because he set such a high standard of leadership.

We may have squandered opportunities to build the Namibia he envisioned.

Yet, this is not cause for despair but a call to action.

It is up to us, the youth of Namibia, to pick up where he left off.

When our time to lead comes, we will strive to build the Namibia he envisioned, a nation of equity, opportunity and unity.

Sadly, he will not be here to witness that transformation and perhaps that is why his passing feels too soon.

ALUTA CONTINUA

In many ways, Sam Nujoma was like the elder in a family, the one we take for granted as they age, believing their role diminishes.

Yet, as the father of the Namibian nation, his absence will be profoundly felt.

As we mourn this visionary leader, let us reflect deeply.

To every individual who has held power but failed to work towards realising his vision for Namibia, to every corrupt official, to those who have enriched themselves at the expense of the people, and to those who cling to power instead of passing the torch to the youth, this moment calls for accountability.

You owe it to the Namibian people.

Rest in revolutionary peace, father of the nation. Pass on our greetings to the heroes who have gone before you.

Your wisdom and teachings will forever be in our hearts. We are grateful beyond measure for your sacrifices during the liberation struggle.

Your legacy will guide us as we strive to realise the Namibia of your dreams.

Ondjendi ino tyuulila, thika nawa kegumbo.
