While The Rich Get Richer …

ALLOW me space in your newspaper to air my disappointment at City of Windhoek.

City of Windhoek, if you think you are curbing the housing problem in Windhoek, think again, because what you are doing with the auctioning of erven is the opposite. The only beneficiaries of erven in Windhoek are the rich and the developers. This letter refers to the recently held auction of erven on Friday, July 10 at the Khomasdal Community Hall. The new extension 16 in Khomasdal had eighty two erven under the hammer. Thirty one of these had a bidding price under N$50 000 as a starting point and the rest were between N$60 000-N$120 000. I’m sure the majority will agree with me that the requirement ‘First time buyers’ was definitely not practiced and will never work. The bidding price of the ervens under N$50 000 did not start at this given price but rather from N$100 000 up. Why? Because those with money pushed the prices up as they know that the majority of the people cannot afford the high prices. If you qualify e.g. for a loan of N$300 000, how can you buy an erf of N$150 00 and still build a house?City of Windhoek next time you have an auction of your erven I suggest that you divide the people according to their incomes e.g. under N$90 000, N$100 000-N$200 00 and N$210 00-N$300 000 etc. Then allocate erven in each category and only people in the specific category should take part. This can be done by using people’s pay slips and make them declare under oath that the information they are providing is indeed correct. You can than follow-up after the auction to confirm that those who acquired the erven are indeed entitled to and that information provided is true. And to add injury to the pain that one went through with the registration process at City of Windhoek, who had to deduct N$50 from the N$500 which was paid for registration. How much money did you make out of this N$50 and where is this money going? One can at least buy electricity units for four days with this N$50 that you deducted.I want City of Windhoek to provide the public with a report on the outcome of this auction to prove that the auction indeed benefited those without housing.Johanna KambalaVia e-mail
