What NBC Needs

THE NBC does not need six general managers, to manager the affairs of the Corporation as it is too costly. It needs a Director General with three general managers for example General Manager Radio services, news and current affairs; General Manager for TV, programmes and Technical Services and General manager for Corporate Marketing, Business Development and Support Services, all supported by line managers and supervisors respectively.
Judging from the big brass the Corporation is loaded with unnecessary positions and needs to put more emphasis on the marketing and sales to bring in more revenue.
Sales and marketing need to decentralised to regional/language stations and every language station need to have sales representative to handle the sales operation of the station-commercially, sourcing adverts, outside broadcasting, and things which can bring in money for the Corporation. These salespeople need to be given monthly targets in their respect regions and failure to meet their targets should result in replacement in the interests of the Corporation. Why are private radio and TV stations doing well without the backing from anyone? The NBC has ten radio stations countrywide with a TV station -why do they fail to sustain themselves and what is the problem which the so called board of directors cannot identify and rectify?
All radio DJs and TV presenters need to be on renewable contracts depending on their performance and the necessity of the programs the DJ are running. All regions need to have a reporter and a cameraman to cover all news and current affairs in their respective regions. Any poor performance needs to be looked at and their work load and expenses need to be monitored by their supervisors.
People are employed to work. With the current board of the NBC, who among them has a strong knowledge of radio and TV apart from politics? And for how long have some of them been there without solving this problem which we the citizens have to pay with our tax money without seeing any progress? The relationship between Nampa and the NBC needs to be strengthened. It will be cheaper for the NBC to own their own fleet rather than depend on hiring cars, which is costly.
The only way to correct this is to impose more discipline on drivers or any other person who might misuse the company assets. Instead of bailing out the Corporation for the salaries, the state needs to help to purchase new equipment. Any unnecessary expenses need to be investigated by the line management and action needs to be taken. If things are not taken seriously they will fail and the Government will be expected to pick up the pieces.
Let’s put aside the traditional way of depending too much on the government. If we are given the tasks to manage, let’s harvest the fruits. For any parastatal failing to perform a consultancy firm needs to be appointed to review that parastatal structures, from the Board to the cleaners. Namibian citizens must strive for hard and quality work.
