Whale Rock Cement donates backpacks to needy pupils at Otjiwarongo

Whale Rock Cement (WRC), in partnership with the regional councillor office for the Otjiwarongo constituency, has donated 60 backpacks to underprivileged pupils at Otjiwarongo Project Primary School.

The donation was handed over by WRC deputy general manager Kevin Lee and outgoing Otjiwarongo regional councillor Marlayn Mbakera through the Friends of Otjiwarongo initiative, which Mbakera introduced during her tenure.

Mbakera, who is set to join parliament, identified the school as having a high number of financially struggling pupils, many from the Themba community.

She says pupils often carry books in plastic bags or without any cover, leading to damaged materials. Mbakera adds that the school also recorded low attendance during the rainy season, as many pupils walk to school without proper protection for their belongings.

Otjiwarongo Project Primary School principal Cherlon Aises welcomes the donation, saying it would help restore the dignity of vulnerable pupils who previously used worn-out bags or plastic carriers.

WRC pledges to continue supporting the school and describes the initiative as the start of a long-term partnership.
