Welwitchia University appoints first vice chancellor

Welwitchia University has announced the appointment of Marius Hedimbi as its first vice chancellor, effective 1 April.

The university’s council says the appointment is a significant milestone in strengthening the institution’s leadership and academic direction.

“Professor Hedimbi is a seasoned academic leader and accomplished scholar with over 15 years of experience in higher education,” the university says.

It says he has also undergone executive leadership training at Stellenbosch University and participated in regional leadership and coaching programmes.

Before his appointment, Hedimbi served as acting vice chancellor and pro vice chancellor for academic affairs and research at Welwitchia University.

The university says Hedimbi has a strong track record in managing complex academic portfolios, strengthening institutional performance, and driving academic and organisational transformation.

A full professor, Hedimbi has an extensive research background, with peer-reviewed publications focusing on antimicrobial resistance, global health and ethnopharmacology.

The university says the appointment of its first vice chancellor is expected to strengthen governance systems, improve research output and enhance academic quality.
