Weekend mayhem claims 7

SEVEN people lost their lives in the Khomas and Karas regions as a result of crime, suicide or unnatural causes over the weekend, according to the latest crime bulletin that the Namibian Police’s Public Relations and Liaison Division released yesterday.

In Windhoek a 25-year-old man was shot dead at about 00h15 on Saturday when he and a female partner were allegedly attacked by two unknown suspects while sitting in a vehicle in Otjomuise. According to the Police, the couple was sitting in the vehicle when the suspects knocked on a window with a firearm.When the man inside the vehicle tried to reach for his firearm, he was shot and killed.The woman with him in the car ran away and alerted the Police.By yesterday, no one had been arrested in connection with the incident.In Khomasdal’s Pronkertjie Street, a 31-year-old man, Benjamin van Wyk, allegedly died in a freak accident with an angle grinder at about 11h50 on Friday.Van Wyk died instantly when the blade of an angle grinder that he was working with broke and cut him on his neck, it was announced.The Police at Rehoboth are investigating a murder case after the 25-year-old Kelvin Beukes died after being stabbed in the chest with a knife, a Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kauna Shikwambi, stated further.Beukes was stabbed at about 08h10 on Saturday at Rehoboth’s Block B, allegedly after a quarrel, it was stated.Also at Rehoboth, a 51-year-old man, Albertus Jacobus Beukes, is thought to have shot himself with a 9 mm pistol on Saturday.The suspected suicide took place at Bahnhof Road near Rehoboth’s old sports complex, according to Shikwambi.Two people also died after being hit by vehicles in Windhoek and at Rehoboth on Saturday.In Florence Nightingale Street in Khomasdal, a 35-year-old woman, Johanna Beukes, died on the spot at about 01h45 on Saturday after she was hit by a white Ford Bantam bakkie while crossing the road, Shikwambi announced.The driver of the vehicle left the scene, and the incident is being investigated as a hit-and-run case.At about 10h15 on Saturday, a nine-year-old girl died on the spot when she was run over by a truck at Block A at Rehoboth.A case of culpable homicide is being investigated, and a man has been arrested, Shikwambi stated.The Police at Keetmanshoop are investigating a charge of attempted murder after a 28-year-old woman survived being stabbed more than a dozen times with a knife in the early morning hours of Saturday.The woman is alleged to have been stabbed 14 times in the neck with a knife at about 01h00 on Saturday, it was reported.The attack, which is reported to have taken place at Keetmanshoop’s Kroenlein area, is alleged to have been carried out by her former boyfriend.The woman was admitted to the Keetmanshoop State Hospital in a serious condition.A 28-year-old man has been arrested and is expected to appear in court on a charge of attempted murder today.Another suspected suicide has been reported from Karasburg.Laurens Basson (45) is alleged to have hanged himself with a wire at his house at Westerkim at around 03h30 on Friday, Shikwambi stated.According to the Police, the couple was sitting in the vehicle when the suspects knocked on a window with a
