‘We’re the Millers’ looks like the kind of film you know is going to be bad but you go anyway because Jennifer Aniston is in it. And that still means something. In this case it means that you will be laughing for pretty much the entire time you are in the cinema.
You will also be gawking because Jennifer Aniston plays a stripper. She is practically naked. Twice. And she looks so not forty that those of us who aren’t forty will think we are forty by virtue of us looking nothing like not-forty.
The movie is also pretty good. Not as good as Aniston’s body but then what in this world is?
Straddling the lines of road film and screwball romantic comedy, the film zooms in on a drug dealer, stripper, teenage runaway and 18-year-old virgin played by Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts and Will Poulter respectively.
All down on their luck and keen to make a quick buck they agree to smuggle some marijuana into the US from Mexico by order of a yuppie drug lord played by ‘The Hangover’s’ (2009) Ed Helms. As people do when drug smuggling, they disguise themselves as a “butter wouldn’t melt in our mouths” family and set out in an RV.
The result is hilarity.
Jennifer Aniston pays a cussing half crazy stripper playing a loving suburban wife like a cussing half crazy stripper playing a loving suburban wife to laugh worthy effect. And young Ed Poulter almost steals her show with his turn as a clueless teen that seems to epitomize the idea that nice guys finish last until…never mind…spoiler.
Jason Sudeikis is as watchable as ever and the stellar cast is rounded off nicely by Emma Roberts who plays just-wanna-be-loved runaway like a champ. Praise to supporting cast can also be heaped on Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn who play a fellow RV family with some kinky marital issues with kooky aplomb.
Many thanks to casting directors Lisa Beach and Sarah Katzman who did such a sterling job of putting them all together for us.
Fun, freak-filled and with some seriously hilarious moments, this is a comedy that will hold your attention and have you holding your sides if you’re in the mood to go with it.
