WANDERERS thrashed Welwitschia by 157 runs on Saturday to join WHS Old Boys at the top of the Cricket Premier League log on 20 points. In another match, CCD Tigers beat Trustco United by 22 runs to go third on the log, eight points behind the leaders.
At the Wanderers field, the home team piled up 257 runs off their 50 overs with captain Nicolaas Scholtz scoring 87, and then dismissed Welwitschia for 100 to complete a comprehensive victory.
After Welwitschia sent Wanderers in to bat, Karl Birkenstock (18) and Wessel Myburgh (21) were both dismissed by Shalako Groenwald, but Jan Frylinck and Gerrie Snyman put on 48 runs for the third wicket before Mauritius Ngupita dismissed Frylinck for 22, with the total on 92.
Ngupita also dismissed Gerrie Snyman, who hit two sixes and two fours in a 34-ball 33, and JJ Smit, who was out to a great catch by Ricku Mans for 22, to leave Wanderers at 127 for five wickets.
Captain Nicolaas Scholtz, however, put Wanderers firmly in charge with a great innings further down the order.
He shared a sixth wicket stand of 65 runs with his brother Bernard (24) and went after the bowling, before he was eventually dismissed off Reynard van Zyl’s bowling for 84 off 69 balls, which included three sixes and five fours.
For Welwitschia, Ngupita took three wickets for 39 runs, while Groenewald took three for 53.
Welwitschia were immediately in trouble when Jan Izak de Villers bowled Scott Winburn for a golden duck, while Pieter Rossouw dismissed the rest of the top order to leave Welwitschia struggling at 46 for four wickets.
Matthew de Gouveia added 20 and Reynard van Zyl 15, but Welwitschia were never in the reckoning and were all out for 100.
Rossouw took three wickets for 24 runs off 10 overs, while Gerrie Snyman took three for 28 off eight overs.
The encounter between CCD Tigers and United at the CCD field was much closer, with the home side scoring 153, before dismissing United for 131.
CCD batted first after winning the toss and were soon in trouble as Joshuan Julies (8), Calum Gunning (2) and Picky Ya France (6) were all dismissed cheaply to leave CCD struggling at 31 for three wickets.
Percy Katyora (34) and Nicol Lofty Eaton (22), however, revived the innings with a 56-run partnership, while Norbert Manyande added 35 before CCD were all out for 153.
For United, Christopher Coombe took three wickets for 42 runs, while Dewald Nell, Lohan Louwrens and Danie van Schoor took two wickets each.
It wasn’t much of a total, but a great bowling spell by Elton Ambambi put CCD in command. He dismissed Darren van Dyk for one, Danie van Schoor for six and Brandon Groenewald for two as United crashed to 12 for three wickets.
United’s middle order revived their fortunes with Hendrik van der Walt scoring 27 and Henry Olivier 22, but it was not enough as they eventually fell short by 22 runs.
Ambambi was CCD’s top bowler with five wickets for 28 runs off nine overs, while Norbert Manyande took two wickets for three runs off three balls.
