Walvis mayor addresses climate change

Trevino Forbes

Walvis Bay mayor Trevino Forbes emphasises the need to take advantage of increased rainfall in Namibia’s desert areas.

The mayor earlier this week participated in global climate change discussions at the Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai.

He said water harvesting would ensure water availability during dry periods and support agricultural activities in arid regions.

He also emphasised the need for desalination at Walvis Bay.

“It provides a reliable and sustainable source of freshwater, reducing dependence on limited freshwater resources. Desalination could help alleviate the financial burden associated with importing water or implementing costly infrastructure projects to transport water from distant sources.

“However, it is important to consider its feasibility and potential challenges . . .

“The processes could also have environmental impacts,” he said.

Forbes said Namibia, specifically Walvis Bay, faces unique challenges in adapting to climate change, particularly to rising sea levels, increased rainfall in desert areas, and changes in the ecosystem.

He shared that strategies have been implemented to promote adaptation and increase resilience in combating the effects of global warming.

The summit, which is attended by delegates from about 200 countries, started on 30 November and will end on 12 December.
