MORE than N$200 000 was raised for the Walvis Bay Mayoral Relief Fund at a fundraising dinner on Wednesday evening.
Approximately 400 guests attended the event at the Walvis Bay Civic Centre. Two of the biggest pledges were made by the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport), which donated N$10 000, and Trustco Managing Director Quinton van Rooyen, who pledged a massive N$100 000.According to Mayor Derek Klazen, the money will go towards providing food, shelter and medical care for the most needy members of the Walvis Bay community.”We often see how men and women affected by unavoidable misfortunes struggle to live better quality lives because there is just not enough resources to go around,” Klazen stated.”I am sure though, with the little everyone here has shared, we could improve the quality of life for many here in Walvis Bay.”Erongo Governor Samuel Nuuyoma said the function not only raised funds but also forged closer ties between Central and Local Government on the one hand, and between Local Government and the business community on the other.”We can only achieve these noble objectives is all stakeholders work together in promoting economic growth, creation of employment opportunities, social economic stability and sustainable development,” Nuuyoma stated.”We need to get partnerships engaged in a different way at local level – that means councils, the private sector and the community,” he said.
