Walvis Bay welcomes new power station worth N$1.28b

A new power station, worth N$1.28 billion, was officially inaugurated on Wednesday at Walvis Bay by NamPower.

The 54 megawatts (MW) Anixas II power station will complement the existing 22.5MW station’s goal to create a reliable source of renewable energy.

Speaking during the inauguration at the coastal town on Wednesday, president Nangolo Mbumba highlighted the importance of a stable energy supply.

“Energy is the foundation of modern economies. Without a stable, secure and affordable energy supply, no country can hope to achieve sustained economic development,” he said.

He explained that while Namibia currently imports between 40% and 70% of its electricity from neighbouring countries, this is unsustainable in the long run. Expanding Namibia’s renewable energy resources, the president said, is vital.

However, diversity and affordability should still be prioritised over self-reliance.

“Let me caution that self-sufficiency should not come at the cost of affordability. Electricity should serve as an enabler of socio-economic growth and not a hindrance to further investment and growth,” he said.

Mbumba’s remarks further highlighted the importance of a well-balanced energy sector, exploring cost-effective renewable energy deployment and strategic imports.

The new power station represents a step towards Namibia’s goal to reach 900MW of installed capacity by 2030.
