The Walvis Bay Backyard Tenants group started fundraising initiatives at Walvis Bay on Friday in order to service their plots at Farm 37.

The tenants, who have been appealing for land from the municipality, were excited to hear that they were finally allocated portion 19 of Farm 37 in July.

The group has been planning to meet the municipality halfway by fundraising to cover the cost of servicing the land.

In a petition to council in February, the group promised to have monthly contributions of N$500 per month, per group member, to service the plots, as well as monthly fundraising activities, if council agreed to their idea.

Group representative Immanuel Festus on Friday said the group was serious about fundraising.

Some group members set up stalls at Independence Beach on Friday and Saturday, where they sold food and beverages.

“We are here today to start our fundraising initiative. We want to fulfill the conditions set by the council to access our land. We were allocated portion 19 at Farm 37. It is 33 hectares in size and will accommodate about 1 000 people. “Yesterday, we received our first quotation of planning. It will cost us about N$1,5 million. “For now, we want to raise about N$750 000. We will also do monthly fundraising events. We invite companies in Erongo to support us. Do not wait for ghettos (shacks) to burn and come with mattresses. This is the opportunity for social responsibility.” Members of the group selling various food items also appealed to the nation to support them at fundraising events.

“We are selling chicken, bread and sausage to raise funds to service our land given by the municipality,” said Andreas Mvula.
“We are here selling. We want to raise our money to buy our plots.

This is the way we will be raising our funds,” said Dina Cornelius.

“I am determined to get my plot. I struggle a lot. The houses are just burning. I will hustle to buy my plot,” said Riana Hakskeen.

“I am tired of burning shacks. We now have hope at Farm 37. We are fundraising to buy our plots. We are waiting for supporters to come and support our fundraising efforts,” said Cristiana Paulus.

The group said they have further fundraising initiatives planned to be revealed soon.
