WAD speaks out against shebeens

THE job losses caused by the closure of illegal shebeens should be weighed up against the massive poverty and destruction inflicted on thousands of adults and children who fall prey to alcoholism and drug abuse.

This was said by Women’s Action for Development (WAD) Executive Director Veronica de Klerk at an Ohangwena field day at Helao Nafidi last week Thursday. “I wish to state that WAD is profoundly disturbed by the silence of those liquor companies that supply alcohol to unlicensed shebeens on a large scale. In WAD’s opinion, such companies are co-responsible for poverty and destruction of families caused by the sale of uncontrolled liquor,” said De Klerk.De Klerk urged Government to investigate the origins of the vast quantities of liquor being confiscated by the Police from unlicensed shebeens.”I further humbly urge the appropriate authorities to institute high fines on companies which supply liquor freely to unlicensed shebeens, since they too are transgressors of the Liquor Act of 1998,” said De Klerk.”I wish to state that WAD is profoundly disturbed by the silence of those liquor companies that supply alcohol to unlicensed shebeens on a large scale. In WAD’s opinion, such companies are co-responsible for poverty and destruction of families caused by the sale of uncontrolled liquor,” said De Klerk.De Klerk urged Government to investigate the origins of the vast quantities of liquor being confiscated by the Police from unlicensed shebeens.”I further humbly urge the appropriate authorities to institute high fines on companies which supply liquor freely to unlicensed shebeens, since they too are transgressors of the Liquor Act of 1998,” said De Klerk.
