VW Amarok single cab not shy to work

The VW Amarok single cab is not called a workhorse for nothing, as it was designed and built with hard work and durability in mind.

Top Revs recently met up with Johan Bronkhorst from Autohaus Swakop to see what the vehicle is all about.

Bronkhorst says two things about the vehicle have caught his attention: the size of the load box and its fuel consumption.

The load box, since it is a workhorse, was designed with loading capacity and extra space without compromising the renowned looks of the Amarok.

Amarok’s impressive 3,57m2 load area, complete with fitted tie hooks, makes it ideal for getting the job done.

Bronkhorst says whenever he looks at the said Amarok, he sees a car ideal for construction work on the main roads.

But it is the engine that makes the wheels turn, and 2,0 turbo diesel delivers a comfortable 110kW (or 125kW, depending on the model) and a maximum torque of 350Nm.

The difference is in the gearbox, Bronkhorst says.

The five-speed manual produces 350Nm maximum torque, while the more sophisticated six-speed manual pushed 405Nm from the same 2,0l diesel engine.

This is more than enough to reach speeds of 170km/h.

Though the Amarok is only available in diesel, its fuel consumption is pretty welcome, since the manufacturer’s specifications indicate 6,9l/100km.

This is an average on an 80l tank of almost 1 160km (around 14km/l).

These calculations apply under normal driving conditions.

The car comes standard with comforts like electric windows, central locking, air conditioning, safety airbags, daylight running lights, and adjustable headlights.

The car’s rough terrain specifications makes it tough enough for construction terrains as the vehicle’s ramp angle is 23°, while the approach angle is 28°, and the departure angle is 23,6°.

The Amarok is also able to take on a 500mm wade.

The cabin itself is basic but functional with enough leg and head space for the crew, while there is ample inside storage space.

To make the cab more attractive for the ‘dirty work’, plush carpets were replaced with rubber floor covering for dirty boots.

The central locking automatic locks the tailgate and petrol cap once activated, ensuring safety of the load and fuel.

With some 18 000km desert Dakar-rally testing ground and eight million kilometre testing by VW engineers this vehicle has stood the test of time.

The new Amarok single cab comes standard with a four-year/120 000km warranty and a six-year anti-corrosion warranty.

The 125kW models include a three-year/60 000km service plan.

The service interval for all models is 15 000km.
