Volschenk star performer at SA Cup

Namibian cyclists excelled at the SA Cup MTB series at Paarl, South Africa, over the weekend, winning a total of seven medals.

Qara Volschenk was Namibia’s star performer, winning two gold medals in the sub junior girls category for 13 to 14 year olds.

In the short course race on Saturday she won the gold medal after finishing more than a minute and a half ahead of Skyler Blom of South Africa, while in the cross country Olympic race on Sunday she beat Blom by nearly eight minutes.

Micah Chase won two medals in the youth men’s category for 15 to 16 year olds. On Saturday, he won the silver medal after finishing 13 seconds behind the winner, Camryn Marais of South Africa; and on Sunday he won the bronze medal after finishing 1:44 behind Marais.

On Saturday, Roger Suren won a bronze medal in the elite men’s category after finishing after finishing 25 seconds behind the winner, South Africa’s Michael Foster, while Johan van Zyl came second.

In the sprog girls category for 11 to 12 year olds on Saturday, Linn Lambert won the silver medal after finishing 22 seconds behind the winner, Mia Malan of South Africa.

In the sub junior boys category for 13 to 14 year olds, JP Lambert won a silver medal, finishing just over a minute behind South Africa’s Zachari Davies.

There were also several other top 10 performances by Namibians over the weekend.

In the short course race on Saturday, Delsia Janse van Vuuren came fourth in the elite women’s category, finishing nearly three minutes behind the winner, Tryler Jacobs of South Africa.

In the junior men’s category for 17 to 18 year olds, Christiaan van der Westhuizen came fifth, Marco Thiel seventh and Sean Lowe eighth, while in the junior women’s category, Rosemarie Thiel came sixth.

In the youth women’s category, Nicole Suren came eighth; in the sub junior boys category, JP came fourth and Patrick von Kunow 10th; and in the nipper boys category for eight to 10 year olds, Logan Hinze finished seventh.

In the Cross Country Olympic Race on Sunday, Suren came sixth in the elite men’s category; Janse van Vuuren came seventh in the elite women’s category; Thiel and Christiaan van der Westhuizen came fifth and sixth, respectively, in the junior men’s category; and Rosemarie came fifth in the junior women’s category.

Nicole came ninth in the youth women’s category; Mienke de Beer came eighth in the sub junior girls category; and Hendrik Baartman and Von Kunow came ninth and tenth, respectively, in the sub junior boys category.
