IT’S been an acca-perfect couple of months for home grown acapella group Vocal Dynamix whose rise to superstardom shows no signs of slowing down.
The group, comprising of David McCorney, Edwin McCorney, Basil Stevens and Jerome Harnoster recently returned to the Land of the Brave after competing in the ARTS showcase in Orlando, Florida – a trip that came about by winning last year’s Trustco Star Performer’s nationwide talent search competition.
Asked how winning the competition and walking away, with amongst others the half a million Namibian dollar prize money, has affected the group, lead singer David is optimistic but remains humble. “As a group we are definitely more focused on producing quality music and we realise that much is expected from us. Everything happened in the blink of an eye, we acknowledge that all praise goes to God, the Most High, and we will never forget where we come from, where we’re going and who will take us there.”
The ARTS showcase, is an annual event which creates the platform for talent all across the world to be scooped up by international scouting agents, record labels and interested parties in the entertainment industry. It took place in Orlando, Florida at the end of last year.
Vocal Dynamix competed in the vocal category, as the only performing acapella group, and wowed the crowds. “Orlando was a completely breathtaking experience. It is an incredibly beautiful place, with genuinely warm hearted people. The kindness throughout the competition was great and really went a long way in making us feel at home.”
As for the competition itself, the group had prepared a new selection for the competition, but in the end went for the song selection they debuted at the Trustco Star Performer competition. “It was a bit of a gamble, and we wanted to see how the American audience would react.” The gamble paid off, as the group won the Overall Vocal Category, and the Top Vocal Performer award as well.
“We are incredibly proud to have had the opportunity to represent Namibia and be crowned as winners at the competition. Winning at ARTS will go down as one of the most rewarding experiences we have ever been blessed enough to experience. It definitely taught us a lot with regards to how we view the entertainment industry. We came into contact with various agents who are eager to work with us and expose our talents.”
The group plans to record their first studio album, and giving something back to the community in the form of charity remains a top priority. With one of their prizes being lifetime access to the ARTS showcase, Vocal Dynamix intends to return. “We are blessed through this opportunity; as a group Vocal Dynamix won the top ten vocal category, we walked away with the overall vocal category award, I came third in the solo vocal category, receiving a scholarship to attend New York Film Academy. Our blessings are truly countless and we intend to work hard so that when we return, bigger doors swing open. Not only for us, but also for our country.”
