BERLIN – Vitali Klitschko will defend his WBC heavyweight title against Britain’s Dereck Chisora in Munich on February 18, Bild newspaper reported yesterday.
Klitschko told the German paper that Chisora, who lost to Finland’s Robert Helenius in a split decision on December 3, is ‘an interesting opponent. For me he clearly won the (vacant) European title fight against Helenius.’Chisora’s controversial defeat in Helsinki was the 27-year-old’s second and he immediately demanded a rematch. Chisora’s record is 15 wins including nine knockouts from 17 fights. It pales in comparison to Klitschko’s 40 knockouts from 43 wins and two losses.Bild said that the 40-year-old Ukrainian wants to fight at least two bouts in 2012, before letting fans make a decision on his retirement.’I don’t want to break the age record of George Foreman, who boxed until he was 45,’ Klitschko said. One of those fights would be a bout against David Haye in Germany in July.’He will lose through knockout,’ Klitschko predicted.Klitschko’s younger brother Wladimir is the WBO, IBF and WBA champion after beating Haye in Hamburg last July.Haye has since retired but indicated he would like a shot at the older Klitschko brother.Wladimir Klitschko was due to fight France’s Jean-Marc Mormeck in Duesseldorf last Saturday, but the bout was called off after the 35-year-old needed two operations in two days to remove a kidney stone. That fight has been rescheduled for March 3 in Düsseldorf.- Nampa-AP
