Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) commissioner general Raphael Hamunyela has announced that all visits to Hardap Correctional Facility have been suspended until further notice.
This decision follows on a road accident that occurred near Mariental and claimed the lives of 11 correctional officers on Saturday morning.
“The Namibian Correctional Service is working tirelessly to ensure that normal visitation services resume as soon as possible. Further updates will be communicated in due course,” Hamunyela said in a statement.
“We appreciate the public’s understanding and continued support during this difficult time,” he said.
Fourteen people died when a police vehicle and an NCS vehicle were involved in a collision along the B1 road approximately 10 kilometres from Mariental towards Kalkrand in the Hardap region at around 07h00 on Saturday.
A police van involved in the crash was carrying six passengers, including five officers and a civilian, while the NCS vehicle had 13 people on board.
The police said eleven members of the NCS, one member of the Namibian Police and two civilians died in the accident.
Other occupants of the vehicles were injured and transported to a hospital at Mariental. Some NCS members were reported to be critically injured.
