Venaani mouns Kenya’s Raila Odinga

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) leader McHenry Venaani has paid tribute to former Kenyan prime minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a brother, dear friend and a towering champion of democracy in Africa.

Venaani says this in a statement issued on Thursday.

“Honourable Odinga was an elder brother and dear friend with whom I have shared decades of camaraderie in the pursuit of democracy and good governance on the African continent,” he says.

He recalls their joint participation in various international forums and conferences devoted to promoting democracy and human rights, saying Odinga’s leadership inspired generations of Africans committed to social justice and inclusive governance.

Odinga, who served as Kenya’s prime minister between 2008 and 2013 died in India on Wednesday.

Venaani described him as an indefatigable Africanist whose courage, resilience and unwavering belief in people’s power will remain engraved in Africa’s political history.

“On behalf of the PDM and the people of Namibia, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr Ida Odinga, the entire Odinga family, and the people of Kenya,” Venaani says.

“Africa has lost a formidable democrat and a historic fighter for freedom and justice.”
