Vegetables worth over N$91 000 donated to Kavango East schools

The Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) has donated 8 900kg of vegetables, including beetroots, carrots, onions, and cabbages, worth about N$91 400 to seven schools at Divundu in the Kavango East region’s Mukwe circuit.

The donation was received by chairperson of the Kavango East Regional Council management committee Damian Maghambayi on behalf of the schools om Wednesday.

The beneficiaries were Martin Ndumba Senior Secondary School, Max Makushe Senior Secondary School, Omega Senior Secondary School, Divundu Combined School, Rukonga Vision School, Andara Combined School, and Ndiana Secondary School.

Maghambayi described the gesture as a practical contribution to ensuring schools have access to fresh and healthy food.

He encouraged school principals to learn from the correctional service’s agricultural efforts by establishing their own school gardens.

“It reminds us that when we work together with a shared purpose, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our people, especially our pupils,” Maghambayi said.

He said the donation is a powerful demonstration of partnership, compassion, and community development.

“Your generous donation of fresh produce is not just a contribution to our schools, it is an investment in the health, education, and future of our children,” he said.

“This act of kindness embodies the spirit of ubuntu – the understanding that ‘I am because we are’. You have shown that correctional institutions are not only places of rehabilitation but also centres of productivity and community service,” he said.

The regional commander thanked correctional officers at Divundu Correctional Facility for managing agricultural activities and acknowledged the inmates who worked in the fields.

He said he appreciated the education stakeholders for receiving the donation with enthusiasm.

The donation forms part of the NCS’ ongoing community outreach and agricultural programmes aimed at supporting food production and improving nutrition among local communities.
