Swapo Windhoek council member Sakarias Uunona was on Friday elected as the Windhoek municipal council’s mayor.
Uunona replaces former mayor Ndeshihafela Larandja and is expected to serve the Windhoek council for a period of five years.
Delivering his acceptance speech, Uunona said financial stability will be a key priority for the city to make use of funding for service delivery.
“Only a financially secure city can respond to the needs of the residents,” he said.
He added that the priorities of the newly sworn in councillors will echo far beyond their term, adding that they are the stewards of stability.
He urged fellow members to approach their roles with renewed energy and integrity.
“Let’s ensure that the next council inherits a more stable and hopeful city,” he added.
Uunona called on the public to join hands with the council to tackle social issues.
“We must strengthen partnership with the youth, private sectors, churches and the informal sector. When we listen more, we shall lead better,” he said.
“Windhoek is changing, the team’s priority and capacity must change with it.”
Swapo’s Albertina Amutenya was nominated for the deputy mayor and vice chair of the Windhoek council.
