Construction of a multi-purpose sport facility at Usakos began on Thursday as part of the government’s N$140-million national sport infrastructure programme, directed by president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
Erongo Regional Council chief regional officer Mupenzeni Ntelamo says the project responds directly to the president’s directive to fast-track the development of sport facilities across all 14 regions.
He says the start of the construction marks a shift from planning to implementation as government moves to meet a national target of starting work before the country’s 36th Independence anniversary.
Erongo has been allocated funding to develop two sport facilities under the programme, with Usakos selected as a priority location to ensure access to sport infrastructure for residents of the Karibib constituency.
The planned development includes the construction or upgrading of a multi-purpose sport ground, the installation of a standard football pitch and athletics track infrastructure, as well as the development of basic amenities such as spectator seating and changing rooms.
The project is being implemented as part of the national N$140-million sport infrastructure programme, with the Erongo Regional Council responsible for managing the regional allocation.
According to Ntelamo, the council is working in partnership with the Roads Contractor Company and local technical teams to carry out the project.
“In partnership with the Roads Contractor Company and local technical teams, the focus remains on quality, durability and adherence to professional sport standards,” he says.
Ntelamo says the construction phase will prioritise employment for local artisans and workers from the Erongo region.
He adds that the facility is expected to provide opportunities for youth development, offering a space for athletics, football and other sporting activities.
“Beyond the physical building, this facility serves as a hub for talent identification, providing a safe and professional environment for our youth to excel in athletics, football and other codes,” Ntelamo said.
Once completed, the facility is expected to enable Usakos to host regional sporting tournaments, which the council says could support tourism and small businesses in the town.
