United States (US) ambassador to Namibia John Giordano says the US wants to grow its partnership with Namibia by focusing more on investment and energy.
Giordano, in a social media post, after meeting mines and energy minister Modestus Amutse on Thursday, said the engagement focused on expanding US investment in Namibia’s offshore oil and gas sector, alongside mobilising capital for critical mineral exploration, infrastructure and value-added industrial projects.
The shift, he stressed, places emphasis on investor-led development, capital deployment and strengthening industrial resilience.
He said US financing institutions, including the Development Finance Corporation, the Export-Import Bank of the United States, and the US Trade and Development Agency, are expected to support funding for projects aimed at bolstering the southern African energy corridor.
Giordano also highlighted growing cooperation in civil nuclear energy, noting that Namibia’s position as a leading uranium producer is a key asset in supporting a secure and diversified global energy mix.
Meanwhile, the US Embassy in a statement on Wednesday said a delegation of Namibian government officials recently travelled to Nairobi for the International Conference on Nuclear Energy, with support from the US Department of State’s Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology programme.
The delegation joined African leaders in discussions on how emerging nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors, can expand reliable energy access while maintaining high standards of safety, security and non-proliferation, the embassy noted.
The embassy reiterated that Namibia, as the world’s third-largest uranium producer, is well positioned to expand its role across the nuclear energy value chain from resource development to future power generation.
“The United States stands ready to partner with Namibia to support the responsible development of its nuclear energy sector and strengthen long-term energy security,” the statement added.
