Urban Glam Design launches kiddies collection

Fashion designer and owner of Urban Glam Design Cathy Tshikesho recently added a kiddies collection to her brand.

Tshikesho is a full-time fashion designer and has been in the industry since graduating in 2007.

Urban Glam Design was officially registered in 2009 and caters for everyone, but mostly targets women. The fashion house also designs bridesmaids, wedding guest outfits, prom and now kiddies birthday party dresses.

Tshikesho says the children’s range currently focuses mainly on girls.

“For the kids, we basically do everything. However, we mostly focus on the rainbow/unicorn dresses, which is for now definitely loved by many parents. Before we designed for kids aged from one month to 10 years old but we would like to do till age 13.

“These dresses are intended for birthday shoots, mainly baptism, flower girls… Besides clothing, we also do backdrop banners,” she says.

Tshikesho says making clothes for little girls is fun and challenges her to be creative.

“The idea for making the kid collection came about at the end of last year but we could not start because we were already loaded with work, so when we got back from holiday in January, we started immediately. Thus far, making the kids collection has been fun because I get to use bright colours and cute accessories, which is different from making adult garments. Designing for kids is obviously fun and easier and it doesn’t take long to make a dress unlike for an adult,” she says.

Tshikesho ventured into the fashion world because of her love for the arts.

“I started designing when I was a young girl. I firstly designed for my dolls. My parents often provided me with magazines and that’s how I developed my love for fashion. I started taking my designing seriously when I enrolled at a fashion school in 2005. “I’m very passionate about fashion because the foundation goes deeper,” Tshikesho says.

Tshikesho advises those who dream of making it in the fashion world to have passion and be patient.
