Unsafe appliances worth N$3 million were destroyed by South Africa’s National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) in Pretoria on Friday.
Trade Minister Rob Davies said the items destroyed were the products of the illicit economy.Items included heaters, cordless kettles, televisions, Christmas lights and power tools.The National Consumer Commission ensured that consumers had the right to bring action against retailers selling sub-standard goods, Davies said.The commission should work with the NRCS to educate communities – particularly those in informal settlements where fires frequently broke out – about their rights, he said.NRCS chief executive Moses Moeletsi said the destruction of the unsafe appliances helped to protect citizens – Nampa-Sapa
