United Africa Tigers hold successful fundraiser

THE Old Crock teams of Tigers, Young Ones and Black Africa won their respective matches at a fundraising day held in honour of former footballer Bricks Hangula at the Independence Stadium on Saturday.

Tigers won their match 5-1 against African Stars, before the old guard of Young Ones scored a 3-1 victory over Civics. Black Africa and Orlando Pirates played to a 1-1 draw, before BA walked away with a 5-4 win on penalties. In the last match on the day, Young Ones again defeated a Combined Tigers team 2-0.The matches were part of fundraising efforts by the Tigers Sport Club for Hangula, who is bed-ridden after a serious injury just over a year ago.The money raised will primarily cover his medical bills. One of the organisers, Isack ‘Tuyeni’ Hamata, told The Namibian Sport yesterday that the day was a resounding success.”One cannot raise a million dollars in a day, but we are very satisfied with the outcome at the end of the day.The support we got from the businesses and individuals who came in numbers to support us, was phenomenal. We thank all the players who made their time available to play, while a big thank you also goes out to all the supporters who were present,” he said.Hamata said the day clearly showed that football was a unifying factor, and he did not rule out the possibility of staging more such events in future. He said retired players such as Jorries Afrikaner, Mike Petersen, Alele Kapule and many others showed that they can still play the game and their performance on the day provided a lot of entertainment for the spectators.Black Africa and Orlando Pirates played to a 1-1 draw, before BA walked away with a 5-4 win on penalties. He said retired players such as Jorries Afrikaner, Mike Petersen, Alele Kapule and many others showed that they can still play the game and their performance on the day provided a lot of entertainment for the spectators.
