A TRAFFIC officer was arrested at Opuwo on Thursday after he allegedly sold a driver’s licence to an undercover Police officer and then shot and wounded his colleague.

Investigators from Windhoek were dispatched to Opuwo last week after the Police received a tip-off that the traffic officer is running a money-for-licence scheme at the town.On Thursday, an undercover Police officer arranged to meet the traffic officer – under the pretext of wanting to buy a licence. In exchange for N$1 500, the deal was clinched.The undercover Police officer then produced his appointment certificate and arrested the traffic officer.Then the traffic officer, who was off duty, took out his service pistol and shot the Police officer twice – once in the stomach and once in the arm – and fled the scene.The heavily wounded officer was first rushed to the Opuwo State Hospital but because of the seriousness of his injuries, he was later transferred to the Oshakati State Hospital. He is still recovering in this hospital where he is reported to be in a stable condition.Later that evening, other Police officers managed to arrest the traffic officer.He will make a first court appearance today on charges of attempted murder and corruption. It is understood that the Police also seized money from his house – suspected to have been raised through criminal activities.
