Unbeaten Unam FC take on African Stars in one of the standout fixtures of this weekend’s Namibia Premier Football League matches.
Defending champions Stars, are joint top of the log with Mighty Gunners on 21 points, but Unam have steadily crept up the log to third place, just two points behind.
They are also the only remaining unbeaten team in the league with four wins and seven draws and their coach Robert Nauseb was quick to praise his defence and his assistant coaches Willem Mwedihanga and Harry Januarie.
“We are very happy with the form that the team is currently in. Eleven games played, and we haven’t lost a game, while we have only conceded three goals so far. This is due to the hard work of our goal keeper coach, Harry Januarie and our defensive coach, Willem Mwedihanga – I need to give credit to them. They have been working since pre-season and their hard work is paying off now,” he said.
Nauseb, however, was quick to dispel any notions of them being title contenders.
“No, we are not title challengers currently, we are just running our race. We are just playing, trying to win games and not to lose games. So, for now, it’s still too early to say that we are title challengers,” he said.
Regarding tomorrow’s match against Stars, Nauseb said they are raring to go.
“To play against African Stars is motivation enough for my players, and when you are playing against the defending champions you are obviously already highly motivated. I don’t need to motivate the boys, they know what is at stake, so we’ll just go out and enjoy the game,” he said.
Nauseb said he expected a packed Unam stadium and a great atmosphere at the match.
“We are playing against a team that’s got a marvellous support base and we are going to enjoy the game. The stadium will be packed and we’ll use the energy from their supporters to raise our level – I think it’s going to be a very good match,” he said.
African Stars face another tough encounter against FC Ongos on Sunday, who are climbing up the log under new coach Ronnie Kanalelo. Since his appoinment about a month ago they picked up a vital 1-0 away win against KK Palace and a 3-0 win against Bucks Buccaneers to move two places up the log, and in sight of the leaders.
FC Ongos and Unam also take on Khomas Nampol who have been inconsistent and are now trailing in 11th position on eight points.
Mighty Gunners, meanwhile, will hope to extend their lead at the top of the log when they host Young African and Tigers at the Mokati Stadium in Otjiwarongo.
The Gunners have already scored the most goals in the league at 18, while their two forwards Bernard Horaseb and Muyeka Mashiku are amongst the top goal scorers with five each, just behind Derl Goagoseb of Rundu Chiefs, who has six goals.
Young African and Tigers, currently eighth and 13th on the log respectively, have both been inconsistent, but Tigers, after a poor start under Brian Isaacs, that saw them at the bottom of the log, have now moved up three places after recent victories against Rundu Chiefs and Eleven Arrows.
Arrows and Blue Waters, who are ninth and 10th on the log on 13 points and 12 respectively, host Rundu Chiefs and Julinho Athletic, who are both in the drop zone and will be determined to move up.
Julinho are second last on seven points and Rundu Chiefs third last on 10.
KK Palace and Eeshoke Chula Chula, meanwhile, travel south to take on Bucks Buccaneers in Windhoek and Okahandja United at the Nau Aib Stadium.
The northern teams are well placed on the log in fourth and fifth positions on 18 points each, just three points behind the leaders.
