THE University of Namibia has launched a new management information system (MIS) aimed at providing easy and wider access to all information about the university at the touch of a button.
The Vice Chancellor of Unam, Lazarus Hangula, said the MIS will provide management with technical information on employee and student data, academic records and employment-related data. “On the other hand the Vice Chancellor may also need to know how many students or lecturers from any specific country are at Unam, or how much money is available in a specific vote of the university.”Also parents, guardians and sponsors may require specific information about their children, students or beneficiaries. In all these cases the process of getting the required information would be easy if there is an MIS in place,” said Hangula. The MIS was implemented through a partnership between Unam and the Navayuga Infotech Company from India.Hangula said when the design of the MIS was tendered, the institution had to consider issues of sustainability and ownership of the software system. The Vice Chancellor also urged Namibians to fight xenophobia and instead welcome foreign experts who come to disseminate knowledge, for the sake and benefit of the country. He said the University should take the lead in this endeavour.”On the other hand the Vice Chancellor may also need to know how many students or lecturers from any specific country are at Unam, or how much money is available in a specific vote of the university.”Also parents, guardians and sponsors may require specific information about their children, students or beneficiaries. He said the University should take the lead in this endeavour.
