Unam to introduce School of Architecture

The University of Namibia (Unam) is in the process of setting up a School of Architecture.

This was revealed by the university’s Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Osmund Mwandemele during the official graduation ceremony of Unam’s northern campuses at Ongwediva on Thursday.

The School of Architecture will form part of the engineering school of the Jose Eduardo dos Santos Campus in Ongwediva and will occupy about five hectares.

Construction will commence this year.

“The university continues to address Namibia ‘s needs through the establishment of institutions such as these and we believe it will contribute to the country’s development, ” he said.

The ceremony saw 559 students graduate from the four northern campuses.

Three other graduation ceremonies took place at campuses around the country over the past month. Also speaking at the ceremony was Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa Amadhila.

Kuugongelwa Amadhila commended the university’s achievements, saying that it has had a tremendous national impact.

“The Kalimbeza and Ogongo rice projects in the Omusati and Zambezi region are some of the great examples of these contributions. The first official harvest for Kalimbeza reported for last year yielded an estimated 70 tonnes of rice, ” she said.

Unam is said to have also made significant impact in other fields according to the Prime Minister, who said the local engineering industry has grown since the introduction of the course at the university three years ago.

“So far, 121 students have graduated from the faculty and an additional 51 engineers will be joining the Namibian workforce, ” she added.
