AS a former student of the University of Namibia, it is disturbing and heartbreaking to say the least to learn of the fraudulent activities that have dogged the institution in recent months.
It is such activities that undermine the reputation and growth of the institution which I believe has the potential to outgrow any other University in Africa. Unam’s security systems, financial and physical, have always been flawed, thus creating loopholes that students, lecturers and administrators alike could take advantage of without being detected. The most viable and sustainable recourse the university can take is to invest in state-of-the-art control systems that will impede fraudsters from advancing their agendas.Such a move, in tandem with leadership support, will curtail fraudulent activities. On the other hand, I would like to commend the university authorities for taking to task those who have violated the rules and regulations of the university. It is encouraging to learn that justice is being administered without fear or favour.Ultimately, those who are found guilty should face the consequences and may the innocent be acquitted in the true spirit of natural justice.Fraud of any kind or form must never be tolerated in any institution especially at Unam, which has at the helm of its logo, the words, ‘education, development and service’ which cannot be attained with fraudsters operating within the precincts of the university.Lastly, regarding the chief housing officer who was suspended recently: I was a resident of the new hostels at Unam and always wondered why other hostels didn’t have DStv.I would enquire from our Housing Committee representatives who were unable to give convincing answers in this regard.I will reserve my judgment on Mr Olivier, but he must certainly be investigated. As they say, ‘there is no smoke without fire.’ Masauso S.Chipandwe Dar es alaam,TanzaniaUnam’s security systems, financial and physical, have always been flawed, thus creating loopholes that students, lecturers and administrators alike could take advantage of without being detected. As they say, ‘there is no smoke without fire.’ Masauso S.Chipandwe Dar es alaam,Tanzania
