Unam move clear at the top

UNAM moved five points clear at the top of the log after their closest rivals, Wanderers suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday.

Unam comfortably beat Rehoboth 43-14, but Wanderers suffered a 25-17 home defeat to Western Suburbs in a thrilling match at the Wanderers ground in Pionierspark.

United, meanwhile, moved up to third position with a 48-31 victory against Walvis Bay, while Kudus moved up to fifth place after beating Reho Falcon 22-15.

At the Unam field, Rehoboth did well to match the defending champions in the first half, with Unam holding a slight 15-8 lead going into the break.

Unam, however, stepped up a gear in the second half and eventually ran in six tries to complete a comfortable victory.

Unam’s try scorers were right wing Silvano Beukes, centre Milaan van Wyk, left wing Sunday Haitembu, scrum half Cameron Classen, eighth man Bradley Klazen and flanker Renaud van Neel.

Centre Denver Murorua added five conversions and fly half Rodney Coetzee a drop goal.

For Rehoboth, right wing Julian Afrikaner scored a try, while centre Chase Diergaardt added two penalties and fly half Serge Loock one penalty.

At the Wanderers field, Western Suburbs gave a great defensive display to beat Wanderers 25-17.

Wanderers dominated the forward exchanges, with their big pack pushing Suburbs back at will in the scrums, but Suburbs defended heroically, while they made great use of the little possession that came their way.

Wanderers centre Ethan Beukes and Suburbs’ scrum half Bronwyn Willemse traded penalties, before Suburbs struck with two quick tries to take a 15-3 lead at the end of the first half.

Suburbs’ left wing Collins Omalu scored the first after turning on the pace and beating Wanderers full back Zaynor Platt with a great side step, and then eighth man Roderiques Victor went over from a bullocking run, after being put clear by scrum half Willemse.

Suburbs went 22-3 ahead after another impressive try by Omalu who turned on the pace and ran 70m to score, but Wanderers came back with a vengeance in the final half hour.

Right wing Deselvano Beukes went over for a converted try and when centre Ethan Beukes scored and converted his own try, Wanderers had reduced the deficit to 22-17.

Suburbs, however, defended heroically in the final stages, and fly half Justin Nel sealed their victory with a late penalty to send their supporters into raptures.

Wanderers remain second on the log on 11 points, but Suburbs move up to fourth place on 10 points.

United moved up to third place, also on 10 points, after beating Walvis Bay 48-31 at Trustco United Park in Olympia.

United ran in eight tries to collect two bonus points, while lock Winmar Rust added 13 points with the boot. Their try scorers were flanker Zane Groenewald, wing Stefan Louw, lock Jan Hendrik Augustyn, hooker Kamaa Kajau, centre Donovan van Vuuren, replacement eighthman Naude Neethling and replacement scrum half Moranzel Strauss.

Walvis Bay scored four tries through fly half Dirkie von Weidts (two), flanker Cevin Harding and prop Wolfgang Rohl.

Von Weidts added two conversions and a penalty for a personal tally of 17 points, while scrum half Steward McAlpine added two conversions.

United are now level with Suburbs on 10 points, but move into third place with a slightly better points aggregate.

Walvis Bay remain at the bottom of the log on two points, but they at least got a bonus point for scoring four tries.

Kudus beat Reho Falcon 22-15 in a close encounter in Rehoboth to move up to fifth place on eighth points.
