UDF candidates await their fate

AFTER nominations of candidates for various leadership positions in United Democratic Front (UDF) drew to a close yesterday, the central committee will now decide if the nominees are eligible to stand as candidates.

The central committee will meet next week to scrutinise those nominated by 28 branches in the country.

UDF is currently preparing for its congress in November, where long-serving President Justus //Garoeb is expected to stand down.

The secretary- general of UDF, Dudu Murorua, yesterday told The Namibian that the central committee will next weekend decide on eligible candidates who can stand for leadership positions at its (November) congress.

“The central committee has the power to accept or reject candidates and next weekend [these] decisions will be made, “ Murorua said.

To be a candidate, a person must be nominated by at least five branches throughout the country for the position he or she will stand for.

The central committee, which consist of 51 members, will also discuss if UDF will have a presidential candidate in next year’s presidential elections. Positions such as those of the president, two vice presidents, secretary- general and treasurer will be some of the most contested positions, according to insiders.

Recently, there were media reports that UDF was divided on participating in 2014’s presidential elections.

The party still enjoys warm support in Kunene Region, where it has won the majority of votes in some towns, while in Erongo Region the party’s support has declined ever since the 2009 elections. “Everything is going well, we (UDF) need to work hard and uplift our party, so that we can take over the government,” Murorua, who is one of the favorites to stand as presidential candidate at the UDF congress, said.
